Nutromics has presented world-first, real-time measurements of creatinine in humans using DNA-based sensors at American Society of Nephrology’s (ASN) Kidney Week 2026. The data comes from healthy participants wearing the company’s Lab-on-a-Patch™ and supports early detection and quantification of changing renal function. The company has also further deployed this wearable patch in the ICU in Australian hospital-based clinical studies.
DNA-based sensing is a platform technology with more than 24 targets demonstrated in animal models. Earlier this year, Nutromics demonstrated real-time drug monitoring in humans in its peer-reviewed Nature Biotechnology study. Creatinine is the first endogenous biomarker the company has monitored in real time in humans with additional studies on new biomarker sensors planned.
Creatinine is a biomarker hospitals routinely use to measure and track kidney function. Specifically, a trending rise in creatinine levels is associated with a decline in kidney function, which can happen during severe infections like sepsis, conditions like diabetes, or when dosing toxic medications, such as the antibiotic vancomycin. More generally, acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in 10% – 20% of hospitalized patients in the United States and has been associated with up to US$24 billion in added hospitalization costs each year. Currently, detecting such a trend requires blood draws and laboratory testing. Such a paradigm fails to capture real-time changes in creatinine, leading to the delayed detection of kidney injury.
“Creatinine is one of the most measured biomarkers in the hospital. It is in almost every ordered panel. Clinicians already act on it,” said Peter Vranes, CEO and co-founder of Nutromics. “What we hope to change is how often clinicians get real-time data on this marker and its trend. We believe that by measuring it continuously we give clinicians the opportunity to act on changes faster.”
Nutromics’ first product is a sensor for vancomycin, an antibiotic that is nephrotoxic. Current guidelines advise that creatinine monitoring should be performed alongside vancomycin dosing. Given this, Nutromics plans to release a version of the patch that can multiplex; i.e., measure both creatinine and vancomycin on the same patch. The goal is to make dosing both safer and more effective. The company has previously demonstrated their ability to multiplex with animal data shared in 2025.
Commenting on the potential for the biomarker, Dr Robert McLeay, Chief Product Strategy Officer at Nutromics said “Creatinine has always been an invaluable biomarker in hospitals. By being able to track it in real-time, however, we hope to extend tracking beyond the hospital to vulnerable patients including those on immunosuppressants or undergoing chemotherapy. This has clear potential to improve outcomes for those who need more vigilant monitoring.”
The Kidney Week data follows Nutromics’ recent announcement that FDA granted Breakthrough Device Designation (BDD) to its first product in development, a wearable for vancomycin therapeutic drug monitoring. The patch is currently for investigational use only and has not been authorized for commercial distribution by the FDA. The company is targeting a potential US launch in early 2028, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory authorization.
About Nutromics: Nutromics is an Australian-founded advanced monitoring company that has built a wearable, DNA-based platform for continuous molecular monitoring. Its DNA-based sensors, integrated with minimally invasive microneedles, are designed to sense multiple proteins, drugs, metabolites, and hormones in real time. Nutromics is advancing toward regulatory clearance and commercial launch of its first product, with operations in Australia and the United States. The company’s vision is a world with zero preventable deaths due to a lack of continuous molecular monitoring.
