Tampa General ranks as the No. 1 academic health system in Tampa Bay and is among only eight hospitals in Florida recognized for its use of advanced technologies to improve patient care, clinical outcomes and operational efficiency.

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has once again been recognized among the “World’s Best Smart Hospitals for 2027” by Newsweek and Statista, ranking as the No. 1 academic health system in Tampa Bay and one of only eight hospitals in Florida to earn this national recognition. The recognition reflects the academic health system’s continued investment in advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics, to improve care coordination and outcomes, support providers and team members, and enhance the patient experience.

Each year, Newsweek and Statista evaluate hospitals around the world for their implementation and use of advanced digital healthcare technologies. The 2027 ranking recognizes 410 leading hospitals across 33 countries, highlighting organizations that are using technology to advance clinical care, improve the patient experience and strengthen operational performance. Tampa General’s continued inclusion comes as the academic health system expands its use of AI and automation across clinical care, patient access and operations, delivering measurable improvements in patient safety, productivity and operational efficiency.

“Innovation is most powerful when it strengthens the human side of healthcare,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Florida Health Sciences Center | Tampa General. “At Tampa General, we’re putting technology to work to help our teams deliver safer, faster and more effective care, improving both the patient experience and clinical outcomes. By reducing the demands that take time away from patients, we’re giving the people caring for them more opportunity to apply their expertise, build meaningful connections and deliver the personalized care every patient deserves.”

Among Tampa General’s most significant advancements is its Care Coordination Center (C3), developed in partnership with Palantir Technologies. The center integrates electronic health record data, predictive analytics and real-time clinical information to help care teams anticipate patient needs, identify potential complications and coordinate earlier interventions.

One of its most impactful applications is the Sepsis Hub, which uses predictive analytics to help identify patients at risk of deterioration from sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection and the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals and enable earlier clinical intervention. Since 2022, the initiative has helped save more than 1,000 lives, reduced 48-hour sepsis mortality by nearly 68% and decreased length of stay for sepsis patients by approximately 30%.

Tampa General is also using AI to reduce administrative burdens on providers and give them more time to focus on providing direct patient care. Through its deployment of ambient listening technology for physicians and nurses, TGH has achieved a 24% reduction in documentation time, saving physicians approximately one hour per day. Additionally, 70% of physicians using the technology reported reduced feelings of burnout, while 85% of patients report a more favorable experience with their physician.

“What’s important is that we’re moving beyond individual technology deployments and putting these capabilities to work across the health system in ways that produce measurable results,” said Scott Arnold, executive vice president and chief digital and innovation officer at Tampa General. “Whether we’re using predictive analytics to help clinicians recognize a patient’s condition is worsening or ambient AI to reduce the time spent documenting care, we’re focused on solving problems that have a direct impact on how healthcare is delivered. The opportunity now is to build on what’s working and continue expanding these capabilities across our organization.”

Beyond the clinical setting, Tampa General is leveraging AI and automation to make healthcare services more accessible and improve operational performance. Recent advancements include:

  • Improving patient access through agentic AI: Since September 2025, Aimee, TGH’s AI-powered call center solution developed with Hyro, has answered more than 2.4 million calls, contributing to a 21% increase in scheduled appointments. The technology is also delivering a positive patient experience, with 93% of patients reporting satisfaction with their interactions.
  • Increasing surgical efficiency and capacity: TGH is using Apella’s AI-powered technology to enhance operating room safety and efficiency, helping surgical teams optimize workflows and better utilize available resources. The technology has contributed to a five-minute reduction in turnover time between surgical cases, creating the potential capacity to accommodate an additional 144 surgical cases per week.

The World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2027 ranking is based on recommendations from healthcare professionals through an international survey, the Statista Smart Hospitals Digital Maturity Survey, which evaluates hospitals’ implementation and use of digital technologies, and national and international accreditations related to digital healthcare. The evaluation considers advancements across areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, automation and patient-support technologies.
